Here's the basic rundown on what's been going on with me:
The drive up to Yellowstone was stressful because I didn't know the VW had 50 quirks that don't appear until you take it on a lonnnng drive, so I worried it was going to die enroute. Plus I accidentally ruined one of my coolant hoses by setting it on a moving belt (YAY!).
At Yellowstone I got my RV site so I got to live in my van. The only bad thing was, RV'ers don't get free internet! How did I survive? I don't know!
In some ways it was a better season than 2009, though overall I thought 2009 was more memorable and fun. I did manage to do some damage to the van's electric hook-up cord & to the electrical box at my campsite (traumatizing when it happened). One other thing of note from this summer is I bought an inflatable kayak. At 11 feet long when inflated it still fits in my van! Just between you & me, it was an impulse buy.
As for getting home, I attempted to do a roadtrip where I didn't spend as much money as last time because I owe my dad a really big debt (for a bunch of automotive repairs & insurance bills). So I drove about 4,000 miles less than last fall, but at nearly half the mpg of last time, so I still spent a crapload of money on fuel. I can't pay off even half of my debt yet. D'oh! That makes me feel pretty crappy, but I did get to see some stuff I've always wanted to, i.e. the Colorado Rockies & the Ozarks. I had MUCH better tires this time, but I still had to be towed (I'm cursed) because I was stupid enough to drive on a thick sheet of ice on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. I felt the back of the van slip so I stopped, but couldn't get going again. A group of hunters towed me off the ice when they found out I was stuck. That made for kind of a fun memory & it certainly beat waiting for AAA!
And, because I fail, I managed to damage yet another thing on the van on my roadtrip home. Backing into a parking space, my muffler hit this concrete thing. It pushed the muffler forward without damaging it but tore the weld between the muffler & the exhaust pipe so that now my muffler is COMPLETELY detached from my exhaust. I can't afford to fix this for awhile so it's a good thing South Carolina doesn't have vehicle inspection laws! Visually it's not very noticeable & it sounds kinda cool (except when the engine is being quirky & the strange SFX are really obvious; then it just sounds like it's trying to die ).
